Make a Wish

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

My grandfather had the weekend of his life.  We went to Washington DC.  The 3rd US Infantry, AKA The Old Guard, honored Grandpa’s service in WWII by asking him to lay a ceremonial wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier…in honor of those who fell at The Battle of the Bulge (the bloodiest battle of the war).
Every soldier we met saluted him and thanked him for his service, saying that Marvin is part of the “greatest generation” and that
if it wasn’t for them, we’d all be speaking German.

His escort was 2 star general, Robert Scales.  General Scales won a Silver Star in Nam for his bravery in the battle at Hamburger Hill.  His character in the movie Hamburger Hill is called Cold Steel.  Scales lost his entire unit in one day and still feels guilty.

We spent the whole weekend with the General and his wife.  He took us a to a restaurant called “America”.

Opus Jazz : Week 4

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

We spent our last week shooting the 5th movement in a Lowe’s movie palace from the late 1920’s in Jersey City.

It was spooky and beautiful.

The entire cast & crew, from 80 feet up.  A happy family.

Words cannot express what an incredible experience making this film has been.   No one did it for the money, we made it for art, FOR LIFE.  We’re all sorry it’s over, but the editing must begin.

The film will air on WNET/PBS in Spring 2010.

Then we moved to McCarren Park in Williamsburg.  Ariel hired these guys who paint parking lots to make the incredible vanishing lines on the ground.

IT’S HAPPENING….

Monday, August 17th, 2009

picture-1.png

After 3 years, our 35mm ballet film “NY Export: Opus Jazz” has officially been acquired by Channel 13 (WNET) for its 2010 Great Performances/Dance in America series.

The film is an adaptation of a 1958 ballet by Jerome Robbins starring dancers from New York City Ballet and shot on location all over New York City.

In 2007 we shot 1 movement from the ballet on the Highline.  Over the next 6 weeks we will be shooting the remaining 4 movements and many adjoining scenes.

Big shout-out to our Executive Producers (and NYCB dancers) Ellen & Sean and especially to our lawyer John for putting this whole thing together.

We start shooting in ONE WEEK!  Stay tuned….

Super-8 Wedding

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

super8_wedding.jpg

Our dear friends Gabe & Liz got married about a month ago in Amagansett (I was Gabe’s best man) and Supermarché pulled out the stops.  We had 4 super-8 cameras rolling (Me, Rel, Nev and Max Joseph) one HVX-200 (Joe Anderson) and a Canon 5D Mark II.  It’s going to be the best wedding video ever.

The wedding got a full page in The New York Times!

Plus, their documentary “Wade in the Water Children” is getting released on DVD soon.

Lena is boss.  Click here to read her full interview.  And why don’t you click here to check out her website?

I think Lena is going to turn us into actors here at Supermarché pretty soon for an upcoming web show she’s directing.

Our dear friend and frequent collaborator Jody Lee Lipes was named one of the “25 New Faces of Independent Film” this month by Filmmaker Magazine.   He’s #25 in the magazine, but he’s #1 in our magazine, Supermarché Magazine.

Click here to read the full article.   (It mentions our upcoming project Opus Jazz, which Jody is co-directing with Henry)

Amazingly, and sadly, they got his website wrong in the magazine.  Click here to see his beautiful website.
