Sperry Commercials…

Friday, June 5th, 2009

We just shot two commercials for Sperry boat shoes.  Both spots were filmed on super 8mm in the waters around Shelter Island by the unsinkable Jody Lee Lipes.  The shoes are impossible to slip in…impossible.  One time, the boat tipped over while Jody was standing on deck, wearing sperry’s–when the boat righted itself again, Jody was still standing.

Lost in the Bermuda Triangle

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

We dispatched Andrew and Nev to Bermuda on Sunday to shoot a commercial for luxury resort Tucker’s Point, in Bermuda.  Poor guys.  These stills below are their first contact, along with the simple message “Everything’s Great.”

If these stills are any indication, things bode well for this upcoming spot.

Harvard Business School : Days 2 - 7

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

I recently spent a week at Harvard Business School, directing a new recruitment video for their admissions office.  The agency was Mono, the producers were Melody Roscher and Justin Lundstrom, the cinematographer was Ed David, the hotel was DoubleTree, and the time was fun.

All of these photos were shot on 35mm film (except the last one) by the inestimable Kelly Munson, Design Director at Mono.

Harvard is beautiful this time of year.

I spent most of the time yelling into this box.

This was one of our more “high-concept” shots.  The guy in the yellow pants drove a boat when they were shooting the opening sequence of “The River Wild“!  Why is Jack Nicholson standing on the back of the boat?

Our last day was back in New York, shooting an HBS alum and one of the founders of Green Irene, PJ Stafford.   As you can see, Ed was shamed into both a haircut and a beardcut.

Model Trains : Day One

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Yesterday we shot at Northlandz, the largest model train museum in the North America.

It was our first shoot using the RED camera, courtesy of Atomix.

This shot was inspired by something I grabbed with my Canon TX1 (which is the size of a deck of cards) on our first scout.  Isn’t it amazing what it takes to recreate that?  We’ll see whose version is better.

Every single one of the 100+ trains at Northlandz can be controlled from this room.

The brave director retrieves a stalled train.  One misstep would have sent him plummeting thousands of feet to his death.

Today we’re shooting across the street at a studio, a.k.a. Studiomarché.

Cabo Day 7: Finally, the beach

One thing from childhood I’ll never forget: My mom told me that if you throw these plastic can holders away without cutting them up, they’ll end up in the ocean and birds and fish will get their heads caught inside. I’ve been cutting them up ever since, and here, just feet from the beach, i find one for a 12-pack, uncut! Quelle horror.

Cabo Night 4: where dreams come true

On the beach last night, by the jetty, Henry met the creature from his favorite t-shirt, a Chinese monster from Shanghai. They went night swimming together underneath a full moon and it was pure joy.
